Our experts

Dr. Alfred Abuhamad currently serves as Mason C. Andrews Professor of Obstetrics and
Gynecology and Radiology, and Executive Vice President, Macon & Joan Brock Virginia
Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. Dr. Abuhamad is a past President, Provost & Dean
of Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Abuhamad had served as past President of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education (SUSME), Perinatal Quality Forum (PQF) and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). He is also co-founder and past-Chair of the Council for Patient Safety in Women’s Health Care, in Washington DC. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, authored eight textbooks in fetal echocardiography, ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, first trimester ultrasound and office procedures, and received numerous national and international awards including the 2019 Commonwealth of Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award and the 2022 Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Life-Time Achievement Award. He is the recipient of the National Institute of Health RO1 grant to study “Novel Tools for the Noninvasive Evaluation of the Human Placenta”. Dr. Abuhamad established the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology’s (ISUOG) outreach program and has led several ultrasound training missions to the developing world to include Haiti, Ghana and Somaliland. He is well known internationally for his work in ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, fetal echocardiography, global outreach and patient safety. Dr. Abuhamad has been a faculty member at EVMS, at ODU and a citizen of Southeastern Virginia for 33 years.


Biography
Dr. Rabih Chaoui
Prof. Dr. Rabih Chaoui is an internationally recognized expert in fetal medicine and prenatal ultrasound. He is Co-Director of the Center for Prenatal Diagnosis and Human Genetics in Berlin, Germany, and former Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Charité University Hospital in Berlin.
With more than 250 scientific publications, several reference books, and decades of experience in fetal imaging, Prof. Chaoui is widely recognized for his contributions to fetal cardiac screening, neurosonography, first-trimester ultrasound, and advanced prenatal diagnosis.
He has held multiple leadership positions within the International Society of Ultrasound in
Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG), including serving as a Board Member and Chair of the
Education Committee. In 2018, he received the ISUOG Stuart Campbell Award for Education in
recognition of his outstanding contribution to ultrasound education worldwide.
Prof. Chaoui is a frequent international speaker and educator, dedicated to advancing innovation and excellence in prenatal ultrasound and fetal medicine.


Biography
Dr. Laurent Guibaud
Prof. Laurent Guibaud, MD, PhD is a leading French radiologist specializing in fetal and pediatric imaging, with particular expertise in prenatal ultrasound, fetal MRI, and congenital anomalies. Affiliated with Hospices Civils de Lyon and Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, he is internationally recognized for his contributions to fetal medicine, rare diseases, and medical research. Through his clinical work, publications, and international collaborations, he has helped advance the diagnosis and care of complex fetal and pediatric conditions

Dr. Tristan Hazelzet is a fetal cardiology specialist and practicing physician at Rouen University Hospital (CHU de Rouen). He is actively involved in prenatal diagnosis, fetal echocardiography, and the screening of congenital heart diseases. With extensive experience in fetal cardiac imaging, he contributes to both clinical care and the training of healthcare professionals in fetal cardiology. Since 2015, he has been involved in medical education and advanced training programs dedicated to fetal heart assessment. Dr. Hazelzet is particularly committed to improving prenatal detection and supporting clinicians through innovative imaging technologies and evidence-based clinical practice.

Dr Edwin Quarello completed his residency in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Montpellier–Nîmes University Hospital network, after which he pursued advanced academic and clinical training in Paris. There, he obtained a postgraduate degree (DEA) in fundamental life sciences and served as an assistant professor and hospital practitioner at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris. Subsequently, he completed a clinical fellowship in foetal cardiology in London and earned a PhD in Medical Sciences, focusing on elastography in baboon foetuses.
Dr. Quarello has specialised in fetal and maternal–fetal medicine for more than 25 years, with a particular focus on prenatal imaging and fetal cardiac assessment. He is currently Head of Department at Hôpital Saint-Joseph in Marseille and co-founder of the Image 2 Centre, which specialises in advanced imaging in pregnancy, gynaecology and paediatrics.
His clinical and research interests focus on innovative imaging techniques in pregnancy, including fetal ultrasound, fetal echocardiography, and artificial intelligence applications in prenatal diagnosis. In 2019, he co-founded Diagnoly, a company dedicated to developing AI-assisted solutions for fetal imaging and prenatal screening.
He is the author or co-author of over one hundred scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals, and has contributed to several books and book chapters on fetal imaging techniques and prenatal diagnostic modalities during pregnancy. His academic work focuses particularly on fetal cardiac imaging, advanced ultrasound technologies, and the integration of artificial intelligence into prenatal medicine.
